Public Events

This section is designed to provide information to the public about the programs which are both funded by DHF and open to the public. Many of these programs run for multiple months, and cannot easily be reflected on our Calendar of Events. We encourage to your bookmark this page, and visit the links of our grantees, so that you can to attend DHF-sponsored public programs often!

  • Event: Art at Lunch: HMS. DeBraak
    Date: Wednesday, April 7
    Time: 12:00 p.m. -1 :00 p.m.
    Location: Biggs Museum
    Price: $18 members/$20 not-yet members
    Description: The HMS DeBraak capsized and sunk in 1798 in the Delaware Bay where she remained until her discovery in 1984. Charles Fithian, Archeologist with the Delaware Division of Historical and Cultural Affairs was Director of the DeBraak research and conservation efforts and will discuss many of his discoveries. Ticket price includes lunch.

    Description: Learn about the region's historic association with food and the personal heritage and regional influences associated with what we eat with author and storyteller, Ed Okonowicz. From the Chesapeake Bay crabs to the Smith Island Layer Cake, what we consume reflects on who we are, where we come from, and where we work. In this informative and entertaining program, learn about and discuss America's regional foods and, in particular, the cuisine most identified with the immediate Delmarva region. Ticket price includes lunch.

    Event: First Friday: Sunken Treasures-Pewter Toys and Other Objects Found on the Roosevelt Inlet Shipwreck
    Date: Friday, May 7, 2010
    Time: 5:00-6:00 p.m.

    Description: In the fall of 2004, during a beach replenishment project at Lewes Beach, sand dredging in the lower Delaware Bay struck a portion of an archaeological site resulting in thousands of artifacts being pumped onto Lewes Beach. Archaeologists from the Delaware Division of Historical and Cultural Affairs recovered nearly 56,000 artifacts. The vessel, thought to be the remains of the British commercial ship Severn which was lost in a storm in May, 1774 is the oldest-known shipwreck discovered in Delaware waters. Craig Lukezic, Archeologist with the Delaware Division of Historical and Cultural Affairs will discuss some of the findings. Light refreshments will be provided.

    Event: Marine Paint Out
    Date: Saturday, May 22 and Sunday, May 23, 2010
    Time: 10:00 a.m. -4:00 p.m.
    Location: South Bowers Beach
    Price: $90 members/$l 00 not-yet members for both days
    Description: Steve Rogers, member of the American Society of Marine Artists, hopes to promote marine art and history, and to encourage cooperation among artists, historians and marine enthusiasts with this plein air oil painting workshop focused on scenes of South Bowers Beach. The history of marine art in Delaware and the surrounding area will be discussed in reference to modem marine art painting techniques. Instruction on finding a suitable subject and creating a preliminary drawing will be provided along with oil painting techniques and critiquing by the instructor. An exhibition of artwork created in the class is scheduled at the Museum on Friday, June 4. Museum visitors will have the opportunity to support emerging artists and learn about marine art and its history in the area.

    Location: Biggs Museum
    Price: Free, all ages
    Description: Come view the artwork created by Steve Rogers, member of the American Society of Marine Artists and students from his Marine Paint Out in Bowers Beach. Those looking to decorate their homes with local scenes will have the opportunity to support emerging artists in the process. Light refreshments will be served.
